Sönke Rothenberger Collects First Grand Prix Win of 2019 CHIO Aachen

Aachen, Germany – July 17, 2019 – Dressage competition kicked off at the highly anticipated CHIO Aachen World Equestrian Festival in Germany on Wednesday, July 17 with the CDI4* Grand Prix. Twenty-two horse and athlete combinations rode down centerline in the Deutsche Bank Stadium, all vying for the first Grand Prix win of one of the largest equestrian events of the year. In the end, it was Sönke Rothenberger (GER) who took the title aboard Cosmo 59, beating out world number one, Isabell Werth (GER), who received the reserve honors.

Rothenberger, a team Olympic gold medalist and World Equestrian Games (WEG) athlete, earned his second-best career high-score in the Grand Prix to win the HAVENS horsefeed-Prize with a 81.370 percent. Cosmo 59 (Van Gogh X Lady by Landjonker), a 12-year-old KWPN gelding, is owned by Rothenberger but has not been to a show since the German Championships in Balve in mid-June where he suffered from colic. Cosmo showed no signs of sickness in Wednesday’s Grand Prix, scoring several 9s and a few 10s in his movements. The seamless test culminated to a score just below his career high-score from the WEG Tryon 2018.

Not often seen in the second place position, world number one Werth and Emilio 107 scored just under the 80 percent mark at 79.450 percent. The 13-year-old WESTF gelding is currently ranked 6th in the world and has been under the training of Werth since 2014. The pair most recently were gold medalists at the 2019 German Championships.

Cathrine Dufour (DEN) took the third place ribbon with her long-term partner Atterupgaards Cassidy, a 16-year-old Danish Warmblood gelding who has had great success in the Junior and Young Rider divisions with Dufour. The 27-year-old Olympian is currently ranked 26th in the world.

Dressage competition at CHIO Aachen will continue Thursday, July 18 with the 1st Stage Lambertz Nation’s Cup CDIO5* Grand Prix and will continue throughout the week, concluding on Sunday, July 21.
